Poetry

I love poetry. It is something that I have enjoyed reading and writing since I was a kid. I hope you enjoy the selection of poetry. Many were written back when I was in high school. Others you will see tell the story of my life as it travels through the years.

Children Are Everyday Miracles

Children are everyday miracles and even though we may think that it is our right to be able to conceive when we are ready, it just doesn't work that way. Sometimes the people who would make the absolute best parents just don't have the working parts to be able to create such magic no matter how much they try.

Sometimes they abuse their ability and will just abort the issue as easily as it appeared. It is all very sad how things work sometimes. I am one of the lucky ones and I'll be the first to admit it. So let's just enjoy every moment we have with their lives whether they be children that we ourselves have born or children from others in our family including those who have become a part of our lives and family through adoption. Each child is a miracle, no matter who gave them life.

This is a poem that explains all about how I almost lost my daughter and the events of that very day on March 10, 2003 when she was diagnosed with Bacterial E coli Spinal Meningitis. I wrote this poem many years ago, and still to this day when I read the words, tears flow down my cheeks.

If you see a doctor or go to an emergency room and they give you their diagnosis but in your heart you still feel that there is something wrong, get another opinion. It took me 3 ER trips and an emergency appointment with my doctor all within 5 days to get some tests done. The first 3 doctors chalked up my panic to the ER as "first time mother" syndrome. I found out just recently that one of the doctors that was in the ER for one of my visits with my daughter was stripped of his right to practice medicine.

It only takes one, so please make sure that you keep seeking until you at least get a prognosis that you are compliant with. Trust your instincts when it comes to your everyday miracles.

How I See You

I nearly lost you when you were a baby
a month old to the day
it was all just so crazy
I had brought you in
many times before
they told me to give Tylenol
and just ignore
the pain and fever
that was bugging you so
but I knew in my gut
to our family doctor we must go
he only took one look
and sent us for tests
he would meet us there
to discover the rest
needles and heel pokes
all seemed to hurt
but the spinal tap you got
was definitely the worst
listening to your screams
I wished I could take away your pain
not being able to hold you
just drove me insane
I knew it was for the best
I prayed you would live
if it came down to it
my life I would give
for you to survive
and live out your days
my mind was just crazy
like living in a maze
the fluid they took
was hazy and grey
Meningitis they said
could take you away
the doctor knew the results
so much in advance
he was on the phone
to the air ambulance
when the results had come back
the plane was already there
to take you to a Children's Hospital
so your life they could spare
by the time I drove there
you already had your meds
sleeping so peacefully
in an incubator bed
I stroked your cheek
and brushed your hair
my drive seemed so long
but I was finally there
Three weeks in hospital
I never left your side
slept cradling you in my arms
and rocked you when you cried
you survived the worst
with flying colors made it through
Beautiful and Strong
that is how I see you

Jolene Belmain

I was influenced by a very amazing writer. Shel Silverstein's books The Giving Tree and Where the Sidewalk Ends stole my heart. He is still my favorite poet and I highly recommend his books. Give them a read if you get the chance.

Thinking Of You

The sun peeps out
from behind a cloud,
showing its shining face.

A flower opens up
revealing its beauty,
so perfect in its place.
But you, my love,
are more than that,

for it is you I wish to seek.
Every single time
I feel your touch,
my knees, they get so weak.

I never thought that I
could feel this way,
but with you I always do.
Whenever I wish
to brighten my day,
I always think of you.

In Full Bloom

Flower petals falling softly
onto the ground floor,
waiting to be renewed
again,
loving it more and more.

The colours get
more full and luscious,
from Babies Breath
to Indian Paint Brushes.

Enjoy the sights
while in full bloom,
for soon it will disappear
like the face in the moon.

Harmony
It's the way that winter
turns into June,
and the way the sun
comes from the moon.
It's the way grass grows
from dirt and seed,
pull the roots from
all the weed.

It's how we need to
take each breath,
and the belief of life
after death.
It's how we'll always be there for each other,

I am your sister
and you are my brother.
We are more than family
more than friends,
we will be here for each other
right up until the end.

Love Blooms Like a Beautiful Flower

Love can bloom and become so very beautiful just like your favourite bouquet of blooms. All you need to do is make sure that it receives the nutrients and attention that it deserves and requires. Love takes hard work and passion. It doesn't just happen to last 50 years or longer by chance, it takes a lot of dedication to get it to bloom to that point.

Work hard for your beautiful flowers and they will, always pay off in the end but don't fool yourself with flowers that have been painted either. Remember true love is full of natural colour, not spray paint. Here are a few of the poems that I have written about love, warmth, and beautiful blooming flowers.
