Lazy Cabbage Roll Casserole Recipe

Just like grandma used to make - Well maybe not quite. Cabbage rolls were pretty much a standard meal when company visited my Grandmother's house. My grandma was an amazing cook and could always find the time to prepare the most scrumptious meals and desserts. Those days almost seem like a thing of the past but we can still have the same great flavour in our meals just like she prepared back then.

She had a huge garden and was used to cooking for a large family so she knew the most economical meals to prepare when the need arose. Her being of Ukrainian heritage perhaps helped just a wee bit in her selection of this recipe as well.

My recipe is similar in taste to hers but by cutting the preparation time I am able to make and fit these meals into my family's busy lives. My lazy girl cabbage roll casserole recipe is so quick to create yet is made without sacrificing any of the great flavour that we are used to. Let's face facts, you just cannot get that great homemade taste from a store bought brand.

So here is the recipe for this lazy girl's cabbage rolls without the roll. It's a casserole dish with all the flavour of the traditional meal but with much less work. I have the Nesco roasting pan and could never say enough good things about this handy on the counter kitchen appliance. It is a big 18 quart professional roaster so there is plenty of room in there to feed my family of six. I love it.  Yep, I know this is a shameless advertising plug but I love this kitchen gadget. I pop dinner in and it cooks while I use my valuable time for more important things.

My Recipe for Cabbage Rolls Made the Easy Way

INGREDIENTS:
8 cups of uncooked rice (precooked)
3 lbs of hamburger (precooked)
1 lb of bacon (precooked)
1 whole bunch of celery (sauteed)1 large onion (sauteed)
1 whole head of cabbage chopped into pieces
2 large cans (680 mL each) tomato sauce

Spices - in no particular order:
seasoning salt,
garlic powder,
pepper,
Italian seasoning.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Cook your rice, brown your hamburger, and crisp up your bacon

2. Use your bacon grease to saute your celery and onions (this will enhance the flavour in your stew immensely!)

3. Add all of the your ingredients into your large roaster and turn it on to slow cook. Allow this to simmer for 4-6 hours (or more if so desired) and you will have one amazing meal.

This meal can be made in sections or at different time intervals as your day allows. When I made mine, my rice was leftover from a dinner 2 days prior and was brought out of the fridge and added to the rest of my ingredients to create this meal. Even so I had enough to feed my family of 5 plus put 3 big containers in the freezer for an easy dinner at a later date. (Did I mention that I love make ahead freezer meals?)

There is such a Delicious Burst of Flavor in this Traditional Cabbage Meal

Nothing says love like good food in the tummy and my grandmom was a testament to that fact. I guess creating great tasting large size meals is a tradition in our family because I now seem to cook for my family much in the same way that she did. I guess all those many weekend at her house rubbed off on me.
